Since my research centers on urban economic development, I have examined tourism and entertainment development. This includes book chapters, conference papers and articles on sports arenas and ballparks, which I regularly find to be financially troubling. It's rare that these developments are successful, tending instead to be draining to taxpayers and becoming political boondoggles . But there have been success stories including Washington, DC's Capital Arena, home of NHL's Capitals. Their owners capitalized on the city's downtown location with multiple Metro subway lines below the arena.
